Penguin Chicks Fly to Durban

South African Airways provides cargo space

Marine and Coastal Management (MCM) have started a second initiative to save some of the chicks on Robben Island. South African Airways (SAA) are providing cargo space aboard all direct flights to Durban to transport chicks to Seaworld at the Oceanographic Research Institute and to the Umgeni River Bird Park. When they are fully grown, the penguin chicks will be released. Animal Travel Services have donated IATA regulation boxes for the transport of the chicks. Chicks are caught during the day and then transported to MCM Research Aquarium in Sea Point where they are kept overnight and transported in batches of 30-60 chicks by SAA on direct flights from Cape Town. SAA initially agreed to transport 500 chicks to Durban and has generously offered to transport birds to Port Elizabeth as well.
